There is always a time when we find ourselves in the wilderness. Sometimes you find yourself wandering in the wilderness year after year after year. It feels like you are going around the same mountain over and over and over again. This is because you truly are like a hamster on the wheel.

A wilderness is defined as a wild and uncultivated region, as of forest or desert, uninhabited or inhabited only by wild animals; a tract of wasteland.

The Israelites were in the wilderness for 40 years yet it was a 3 day journey from the Red Sea to the Promised Land. Why did it take so long for them to get to their destination? (Numbers 14:33)

John the Baptist’s mission was right in the wilderness as called to all those who would hear, to make way for the Lord. (John 1:23)

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and after fasting for forty days and nights the tempter came to Him with various temptations. (Mark 1:12-13)

Wilderness seasons are brutal. They wipe out every single fiber of resolve and drain any source of joy. They are humiliating, lonely and deafeningly boring.

Just like the Jews, you may arrive at a new destination (career, relationships, financial security, life purpose, etc) settle, develop, begin to feel at home and attempt to assimilate into the majority culture and society. Suddenly, everything collapses. A mighty and unforeseen wind uproots you after “centuries” of living there and you are forced to move.

The wilderness is a scary place. We never know what’s coming around the next bend. We never know what lies ahead despite how through we are at planning out our days. Life has its fair share of surprises. Get used to the fact that you can’t control everything around you. But that doesn’t mean you go with the flow. No! Do your part and everything else will fall into place.

Being in the wilderness should not be all gloom and doom. Its unchartered territory and it’s yours for the taking. Have fun exploring the unknown, within safe limits but have fun with it. Each season comes bearing its fair share of gifts and lessons that nurture and mould us into better versions of ourselves. This only happens if we break out of our safety nets and snug cocoons and try something new.

For too long you’ve have accepted the status quo in various facets of your life. You’ve been okay with how things have turned out and you never fight back. You’ve chosen to be lackluster in your responsibilities. Your notion has always been if no one complains, then it’s all good. You’ve given in to the bareness of the wilderness not knowing that it’s meant to shape and mould you.

However that’s not the case today. Not today, no, not today. Today, you fight back. You choose to thrive and not merely exist. You choose not to be the wall flower that’s barely noticed and is instantly forgotten. You choose to fight for your share and step into the unknown.
